Job Title: Executive Director
Reports To: Board of Directors
Summary of Job: Under the general direction of the Board of Directors, serves as the executive director of Starlight Children’s Foundation MidAtlantic, a nonprofit organization that provides in-hospital and out-of-hospital entertainment and activities to brighten the lives of seriously ill children and their families. Has responsibility for planning, organizing, directing, supervision of staff and coordinating all programs and activities. Work is performed independently according to general policy direction and is reviewed by the Board of Directors through evaluation of results achieved.
Position Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to):
General Management and Administration
- Manage the staff of three to five full time professionals and large cadre of volunteers
- Responsible for day to day operations of Starlight Children’s Foundation MidAtlantic
- Work with a Board of Directors, develop and implement a strategic vision
- Establish and implement the annual business plan and fiscal budget
- Liaise with Starlight International headquarters office, and other Starlight chapters
Program Services
- Establish and maintain relationships with pediatric facilities. Promote and distribute information to these facilities on each of our programs
- Direct program services staff to revise, update and add the programs that the Foundation offers to seriously ill children and their families
- Assist with screening and training of all volunteers
Fund Raising and Communications
- Maintain and enhance relationship with existing and prospective individual and foundation donors
- Communicate and collaborate with organizations and individuals in the community
- Oversee staff that develops and maintains new marketing materials (brochures, tribute cards, etc)
- Create and distribute Starlight MidAtlantic Annual Report
Position Requirements (include):
- Successful candidate should have 5-10 years professional experience in a leadership role at a nonprofit or a mission-driven profit organization
- Experience in fund raising, special event management, marketing, budgeting, and board governance
- Genuine interest in and passion for the mission of the Foundation: to brighten the lives of seriously ill children and their families
- Knowledge of fundraising processes accompanied by relevant fundraising experience, including sponsorship solicitation, event marketing, event logistics and volunteer management
- The position requires excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to manage donor and board relations as well as volunteers and staff
- Budgeting and fiscal management skills appropriate to managing the financial affairs of the organization
- Ability to deal with a variety of sensitive issues and needs from ill children and their families
- Bachelors or Masters degree required

Spring Internship: Marketing, PR and Communications Department
Starlight MidAtlantic is seeking a communications intern to assist with a range of communications projects. Recent graduates and current students pursuing a degree in communications, public relations, marketing, or related field are encouraged to apply. Depending on skills and interests, intern projects may include:
- Assisting with event marketing
- Maintaining and expanding the media contact database and in-house outreach mailing list.
- Organizing media clippings and creating media hit book.
- Building network partnerships and supporting outreach programs.
- Assisting with website maintenance, print and e-newsletters.
- Working on new and current media outreach.
- Helping to create and maintain media outlet relationships.
- Writing and editing press releases and media announcements.
- Planning special events and turnkey events.
- Assisting in new program launches.
- Creating marketing materials and displays.
- Preparing cause marketing proposals, Starlight MidAtlantic information and press packets.
- Other projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Strong attention to detail.
- Strong computer skills, including Kintera, Photoshop, Illustrator, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Word.
- Demonstrated writing skills and the ability to conceptualize and write position-oriented copy.

Spring Internship: Special Events Department
Starlight MidAtlantic invites college students interested in event planning, fundraising, and non-profit work to participate in an internship supporting the Director of Special Events.
This is a professional internship designed to quickly integrate the intern as a member of the Special Events team and provide hands-on experience in all administrative and creative aspects of special events. The intern is expected to perform in a fast-paced, demanding events environment within the department. Each year, Starlight MidAtlantic produces a major fundraisers - Taste of the Stars Gala , Wine Dinner and a golf tournament.
The Special Events Intern will assist with developing and executing the above events to gain familiarity with the process, goals, and methods to achieve goals
The ideal candidate will have strong written and oral communication skills, as well as the ability to handle multiple projects and maintain an organized environment are required. A working knowledge of Microsoft Office is a must. A minimum of 12 hours per week is required.
