Support Starlight’s Falmouth Road Race Team on the Road for a Match!
Starlight has assembled a Trio Team for the August Falmouth Road Race and with your help; they can earn a match grant from the Lenny Zakim Fund to help brighten the lives of Starlight children and families.
Trio Team members Hillary, Corey and veteran racer Dan have set a goal to raise $1,000 each for Starlight children and families. If they make their $3,000 goal, the Lenny Zakim Fund will donate an additional $2,500 to support their efforts – for a total team gift of $5,500!
One hundred percent of the funds raised by the team will support Starlight New England programs benefiting Starlight children like Serena. Eleven-year-old Serena was born with sickle cell anemia, and she has been in and out of the hospital her entire life. At just eight-months-old, she had her spleen removed because it could not fight off infections and she has since battled chronic illness on a daily basis and endured countless procedures and medications. As recently as last December, she spent 16 lonely, scary days in the hospital with pneumonia. While the rest of us were welcoming 2010 with champagne and noisemakers, Serena’s family was by her side on New Year’s Eve giving thanks that she had lived to see another year.
Life is unpredictable for this little girl, but Serena and her family find renewed hope and a support system they can count on through Starlight’s programs, both in the hospital and when they are at home. When Serena is hospitalized for days and weeks at a time, she passes the long hours and tries not to think about the medical treatments she has in store while watching DVDs and playing her favorite video games on Starlight’s Fun Center™ mobile entertainment unit that rolls right up to the side of her bed. When she is healthy enough to be at home, the entire family looks forward to Great Escapes™ family activities like sporting events, movie nights and trips to amusement parks where they can enjoy spending time together away from the hospital and make special memories they will treasure for a lifetime.
Children like Serena continue to inspire the Falmouth Road Race Trio, and they need your support, to reach their goal.
